STUART MEMBERY

STUART MEMBERY is one of the world’s celebrated designers. Membery’s work spans Architecture, Interior, Fashion, Fine Art and Product design.

Stuart Membery is the recipient of the prestigious Australian Bi-Centennial Award presented by their Royal Highness’ - The Prince & Princess of Wales at the Sydney Opera House, Australia

The Stuart Membery progression from Fashion to Interior and finally Architecture is all but unique. There have been many architects that have gravitated towards fashion but few who have convincingly moved in the opposite direction.

From his Studio in Bali, Indonesia, Membery works with his draftsmen the same way he works with his pattern technicians and cutters.

STUART MEMBERY HOME COLLECTION

For Membery, branching out into furniture was a natural progression from his internationally successful Bed and Bath Collections.

The STUART MEMBERY HOME COLLECTION comprises of Furniture, Accessories, Floor Coverings and Lighting and the soon to be launched Membery brand extensions of Textiles and Top of Table.

Membery mostly works with mahogany and rattan and his signature style echoes the atmosphere of bygone eras. Colonial, Beach and Plantation are popular themes that run through the STUART MEMBERY HOME COLLECTION.

Celebrating the beauty of traditional style while breaking some of its rules, you can take a page out of Membery’s book, and add your own sense of relaxed whimsy to create spaces that are versatile, original and truly livable. It’s all about blending a classic sensibility with a dose of irreverence and a dollop of humor to achieve an interior that is tasteful, eclectic and always welcoming.

Membery finds inspiration for his Home Collection in childhood memories, current trends, and favourite belongings including his designs for rugs, lamps and accessories.

BACKGROUND:

Born: Perth, Australia
Graduated from The King’s School, Sydney, Australia
Stuart was the youngest student to attend NIDA
(The National Institute of Dramatic Art) where he studied acting, Sydney Australia

EARLY CAREER:

During the 70’s Stuart entered the field of advertising as a copywriter and wrote for Australia’s leading fashion accounts.

Membery also wrote a weekly lifestyle column for Sydney’s Daily Mirror and Telegraph Newspapers.

During those years Membery spent time in his own studio painting “Fashion Art” - Membery designs his own textiles.

In the mid 70’s, Membery was commissioned by the Managing Director of CARTIER to design a range of fabrics, floor rugs and ceramics. Based in Hong Kong the next years were spent traveling between Paris, Tokyo and New York.

At a chance meeting in Hong Kong, Membery met the owners of a United States based clothing company. They invited Membery to join their company in San Francisco to design their ‘Sweet Baby Jane’ shirt line. Within a year, Membery wanted to develop the line into a fully co-ordinated fashion collection. Encouraged by the run-away success of their fledgling designer, the brand was re-labeled ESPRIT. Membery became an instrumental component in changing the face of contemporary fashion and creating the image of a company whose unprecedented annual turnover exceeded $2 billion world wide.

Lessons well learned during that time and applied in Australia created one of the countries highest profile designers

STUART MEMBERY Women’s / Men’s Collections

Following his time with ESPRIT, Membery returned to Australia to find that his own country had discovered a new energy – its potential was electric

In July 1982 the first Australian Collection of the STUART MEMBERY Label took to the streets.

The STUART MEMBERY label crossed fashion boundaries and became an image event. It relied heavily, not only on the product, but also on the powerful personality of its principal designer.

The unique combination captured the imagination of the fashion world and raised the designer to international celebrity status. Hand in hand the product and the personality behind it produced a fashion profile described by one fashion publication as “the single most important influence on Australian fashion”.

In 1987 Membery became the first Australian designer to be invited to show at the prestigious New York Collections.

The Stuart Membery brand is one of the few lifestyle labels that have earned an international reputation. His easily recognized Collections have been involved in media events in Sydney, Paris, London, San Francisco, Tokyo, Chicago and New York.

BEYOND FASHION

Membery’s talents extend to much more than Fashion – the skills of Membery are not confined to clothing alone. He is a man of passion, exuberant in his sharing and dedicated to excellence in art of living.
